Weather is part of the place
Visitors sometimes ask whether a tour still goes ahead when it snows. In Trondheim, snow is rarely the problem. Snow is often the reason the forest feels magical, the city grows quiet and the light appears softer than anywhere else.
Winter here is not a guaranteed postcard. Conditions move. Temperatures rise and fall, wind changes how cold the air feels, and a clear morning can become a snowy afternoon. We do not promise perfect weather. We promise local judgement, honest communication and an experience shaped around the conditions we actually have.
Like Vikings, we do not wait for the elements to disappear. We prepare, adapt and meet them—with safety, warmth and good humour.
The simple three-layer system
You do not need specialist expedition clothing for our soft winter adventures. You do need layers that work together and can be adjusted as you move.
Warm socks, gloves or mittens, a hat that covers the ears and winter footwear with room for your toes make the biggest difference. Tight boots and compressed socks often feel colder than slightly roomier footwear.
A boat is not the same as a snowshoe trail
On an open winter boat, guests sit more and feel the moving air from the water. Dress warmer than you would for a city walk, even when the thermometer looks mild. A windproof outer layer, insulated footwear, gloves and a warm hat are essential.
During snowshoeing, dogsledding and forest walks, the body produces more heat. Start comfortably cool rather than already sweating, and keep an extra warm layer ready for pauses by the fire or in the lavvo.
For city walks, expect a mixture of movement and standing still while the guide tells a story. Good footwear matters: Trondheim pavements can shift between dry ground, packed snow, slush and ice during the same day.
The experience changes with the conditions
Fresh snow can soften every sound. Wind can make a short outing feel more adventurous. Low cloud may hide the stars but make the forest intimate and atmospheric. We adjust pace, route, stops and activities so the day remains enjoyable and responsible.
Conditions are never used as an excuse to ignore safety. If wind, visibility, ice or another factor makes the planned experience unsuitable, we change the plan, offer another departure or cancel according to the applicable booking terms.
When we change the plan
Weather decisions are based on the specific activity and location—not only the symbol in a weather app. A sheltered forest route may be comfortable when the fjord is not. A boat departure may need a different quay or route. A winter activity can be moved slightly in time to use better conditions.
Check your email and messages before departure. If we make an operational change, we will explain what is changing and why. Guests should always follow the latest meeting point and time in their confirmation.
Your winter checklist
Bring these essentials
- Wool or technical base layers
- A warm mid-layer
- Windproof and preferably waterproof outerwear
- Warm winter boots with good grip
- Wool socks, hat and warm gloves or mittens
- A small bag for an extra layer and personal medication
- Your phone with the latest booking message available
The goal is not to conquer winter by fighting it. The goal is to understand it well enough to be comfortable inside it. When you are warm, prepared and in good hands, a little weather often becomes the part of the day you remember best.
