A whole pilgrimage story in a single day

You do not need weeks away or hundreds of kilometres behind you to understand why people walk toward Nidaros. This guided day follows a meaningful section of the St. Olav Ways from Smistad, through forest and lived-in landscapes, down toward Ila and the historic heart of Trondheim.

The pace leaves room for landscape, food, reflection and conversation. Your guide shares the traditions surrounding Saint Olav, medieval pilgrimage and the modern revival of the route, while each participant is free to experience the walk in a personal way.

A real day outdoors

The path changes with the season.

Sun, rain, mud and warm days all belong to walking in Trøndelag. The tour normally operates in varied weather, and guests need footwear, clothing and fitness suited to several hours on foot. The destination feels different when you have earned the final approach.

We help you reach the starting point so the day can finish naturally at Nidaros Cathedral.

A packed lunch and coffee are included, with time to pause and share the landscape.

Pilgrim stamps

Collect a stamp at Ila Church and another at Nidaros as part of the traditional arrival.

How fit do I need to be?

You should be comfortable walking approximately 17 km over four to five hours on mixed surfaces. The pace is unhurried, but the distance makes this a proper day walk.

Where does the walk start and finish?

The walking route starts at Smistad and finishes at Nidaros Cathedral. Transport to the starting point is included; exact meeting details are sent after booking.

What food is included?

A packed lunch and coffee are included. Tell us about allergies, vegetarian requirements or other dietary needs when booking.

Does the tour operate in rain?

Yes, the walk normally operates in varied weather. Bring waterproof clothing and suitable footwear. The guide may change or cancel the walk if conditions create a safety concern.

Can I rent walking poles?

Yes. Walking poles can be rented for NOK 50. Request them in advance so we can bring the correct number.

Do I need my own insurance?

Yes. Participants are responsible for suitable personal travel and activity insurance for the walk.
