Two Olavs—and the making of a capital
Trondheim's story begins with power, travel and ambition. Olav Tryggvason established the town at the mouth of the Nidelva in 997, creating a strategic centre for trade and royal authority. A generation later, Olav Haraldsson's death at Stiklestad and transformation into Saint Olav changed the city's place in Europe.
This walk keeps the two kings distinct while showing how their stories became woven into the same city. We move from the royal residence and market square through the medieval street pattern toward Nidaros Cathedral, following the shift from Viking stronghold to pilgrimage destination.
Not every Olav is the same Olav.
